I asked my aide if she could stay with dad from Thursday noon overnight until Friday afternoon.
She scrunched up her eyebrows and looked at me like I had asked something a little crazy. I thought her reaction was a bit strange.
But after she left I thought about it.
Really it is only in the caregiver universe where working days and nights without interruption seems not only reasonable but normal.
Had to laugh at myself.
We're thinking we're going to try a little trip this week. Kind of a practice run before our slightly longer trip for our anniversary.

so did your aide actually turn you down? would your brother be willing to do a 48hour shift instead of his 24?
i hope you are able to work something out to get away. you are right, caregiving doesn't have set hours, at least not for the primary caregiver!
It's true - there are no time clocks to punch in our world. One shift rolls into the next, and the next after that.
I really hope you can get someone to stay with your dad so you can take a well-earned break. I like Nancy's idea of your brother if your aide isn't willing.
Where will you go?
We're going to drive to the Dallas area and probably spend a couple of nights. I have most things worked out.
Thought about taking the train. One of my goals is a train ride since I've never been on one. But this isn't the right time.
I hope you have a wonderful trip.
Yes we are on all day and night. I really don't even like the term 24/7 because that almost sounds like there is a beginning and an end to our shift.
I hope you get to do something FUN Flint! You so deserve it! Where are you going for the Anniversary?
